'Livability at the Ballot Box'

In the current issue of 'World Watch' (pub. by the Worldwatch Institute)
there is a quick summary of a Brookings report: 'Livability at the Ballot
Box' (available at: http://www.brook.edu/ES/urban/myers.pdf).

This report discusses the growing variety and number of proposals and
local ballot initiatives designed to 'rein in suburbia, protect green
space, and channel new development twoards existing communities'.

It's long (21 pages) but rather interesting and looks at creating
urban-growth boundaries, rezoning, sales tax revenue usage for
conservation, etc. Voters in 31 states approved 72 percent of these state
and local initiatives. (13 state and 226 local initiatives)

It's July, and that means it must be time for the Aryan Nations to march in
Couer D'Alene.

As was the case last year, people from Idaho and around the nation (and
Canada!) are mobilizing to counterbalance the Nazis' hostile and
hate-filled appearance. I understand that there will be a local event in
Moscow on Saturday, but I'm only informed of planning with regards to CD'A.

Plans are tentative, but currently, Palouse-area residents will be arriving
in the Rosauer's parking lot at 6:30 AM on Saturday, and will be leaving
the lot at 6:45 to caravan up to CD'A. People may line the parade route
and show their disapproval in whatever peaceable way that suits them
(signs, chanting, turning their backs, etc.).

Results from confrontations last weekend hint that the local police will
have a much more hands- off approach than last year, perhaps only
intervening when there is serious trouble.

Any Lawyers on the list who would be interested in going as legal observers
can contact me, and I can put them in touch with event organizers.

On Thursday and Friday, there will be tables set up at Friendship Square in
downtown Moscow. People may go there to take pamphlets, talk to
organizers, and make donations to help support the anti-fascist effort. As
was the case last year, the group will be renting two vans to help
transport people to and from CD'A.

Between forty and fifty Moscow-area resident demonstrated at last year's
Aryan Nations march, joining 1,000-2,000 demonstrators along the parade
routes.

I will update Vision 2020 on plans as they occur.

Tonight I learned that right-wing extremist fliers were recently found
posted at several downtown Moscow locations. While some people may think
that the Aryan Nations compound in Hayden Lake has no effect in their
lives, this propaganda effort by neo-Nazis in Moscow demonstrates that the
far-right extends its reach even to areas we thought "safe."
