can't we do better than this?

According to the schedule announced in the Daily News yesterday (6/23), real
public input is little more than an afterthought in the series of meetings
planned for further decision-making regarding the future of the
Pullman-Moscow Corridor. On July 1, representatives of local governments
and universities will discuss the future of the Corridor, then the Whitman
County Commissioners will hash it over again on July 7, then at some
undefined point in the future, a public hearing will be scheduled to discuss
whatever deal the local officials have agreed to.

Can't we do better than this? Can't we set up a process that includes
public input at the beginning, not as a last-minute addition? Can't we
build a plan that in fact is based upon participatory decision-making?

Having the local officials strike some kind of deal regarding the Corridor,
and then getting that deal stamped by the Whitman County Commissioners,
doesn't seem like public input to me.
