Corridor

Today, travel between Moscow and Pullman is like a leisurely drive in the
country, a pleasant and quick trip between two distinct towns.

That may change very soon, however. The Whitman County Planning Commission
wants to remake the corridor trip into a regular big-city commute by filling
the open spaces with retail, wholesale, and industrial buildings.

Soon, I'm afraid, this leisurely drive will have all the charm of a
California strip mall, complete with stop-and-go traffic, stoplights, ugly
sprawl, fast food joints, anxiety and road rage.

As businesses pull out of both Moscow and Pullman seeking the greener
pastures of the Corridor, both towns will be left with empty buildings and
lower tax revenues.

A few landowners, developers and builders will have made some short-term
bucks, but our quality of life will have taken another major hit.

If you are equally concerned, please attend the public meeting of the
Whitman County Planning Commission that will discuss this proposed
plan--Wednesday, May 19, at the Whitman County Public Service Building
auditorium in Colfax at 8pm. In addition, the cities of Moscow and Pullman
as well as the universities and counties are expected to meet to discuss
this regional problem, so you can express your concerns to your mayor or
council member and push for a real public input process involving the
governments and citizens from the Palouse region.
