Alert to Visionaries: A Federal bill empowering FDIC with broad, almost
indiscriminate investigative and reporting authority may seriously invade
household finance privacy according to a Washington source (Dr. T.A.
Cooper --
tacooper@dca.net). Only a few days remain for citizens to register a
protest against --
- bank monitoring of personal accounts to discover any "source of
funds", to examine your "normal and expected bank transactions, and to
report on "suspicious activity" as determined by federal investigators
- require bank tellers to inform on any customer whose account appears
to them to be suspect
These measures would appear to empower both bank employees and Federal
agents to cast criminal shadows over anyone whom they suspect of engaging
in questionable financial transactions. But the definitions and criteria
for doing any such reporting appear questionable. Freedom and
confidentiality in banking may well be threatened. For more information,
check the web at -- www.defendyourprivacy.com (a petition is included
there). Dr. Taylor may be able to provide more information. A word to
the wise? It may not be as bad as it sounds, but some of us think that
more congressional and citizen review is very necessary here. W. Ken
Medlin
