Fwd: Skatepark Memo
Below is a copy of the recent memo from City Park guru Roger Blanchard
to the City Council about the skateboarders' park planned for the area
east of the Eggan Youth Center.
I have been very impressed with the skateboard park idea. It is a youth
facility that this town needs, and it is great to see the skateboarders
themselves raising the money.
The attached list of fundraising events is not attached, since it was
not included in the message to me. I hope it will be available soon, so
we can all see how we can get involved in helping make this park a
reality.

>Since the City lent its support to the development of a Skate Park at
the
>Eggan Youth Center in February, there has been substantial progress
toward
>developing a design and raising funds to build the facility.
>
>Fund raising activities slowed considerably as the school year ended in
May.
>Shawn Claytor, who had been acting as the funding raising coordinator
for
>the Skaters Association, graduated and returned to his home in Texas.
Jeff
>Sweet, another UI student, has recently stepped in to assume Shawn's
role.
>Shawn Rider, who is assisting Jeff in the fund raising effort, has
created a
>web page with help from the skaters. The page details contacts, fund
>raising projects, and other information relevant to the skate park
project.
>The web site address is www.wdog.com/skatepark.
>
>UI Architecture Professor Wendy McClure's students generated four
design
>proposals in cooperation with local skaters. One of those designs has
won
>the approval of most of the skaters and includes limited construction
>details. Further refinement of the design and additional construction
>details are still needed. Engineering review of the final design will
also
>be required.
>
>To date the Skaters Association has generated close to $7,000.00 in
cash,
>not including the $10,000 pledged by the school district and the City's
>match. There are also reports of pledges of construction assistance
from
>local contractors and local service groups. Numerous fund raising
>activities are being planned in addition to the donation cans placed at
>various businesses around town. A table is being set up weekly at the
>Farmer's Market where T shirts and buttons are being sold.
>
>A public meeting held in the Community Center on July 14 attracted
about 30
>supporters of the skate park. Those in attendance were able to sign up
for
>the various fund raising projects being planned by the group. Attached
is a
>list of projects compiled by fund raising coordinator Jeff Sweet. One
>concern raised by the group was the lack of a temporary area sanctioned
for
>the use of skaters until a permanent facility can be built.
