Tattletale Pledge  (June 18, 1997)

   Pupils will pledge to report illegal activity

    (Fairfield, Illinois) -- Pupils entering grades four through
eight in Fairfield, Illinois, are going to have to take a pledge.
    They'll have to promise to report any suspected illegal activity
in school, and to stay away from guns, drugs and violence.
    The district says the new policy is a way to keep pupils and
staff members out of danger.
    The so-called "tattletale" provision has raised some eyebrows
but Wayne County Public Defender David Williams says he thinks the
pledge would stand up in court.
