1. POTENTIAL LOSS OF WELFARE SUPPORT--The federal government has
threatened to take away $43 million for welfare and child support
enforcement
unless the state does more to crack down on deadbeat parents. One
enforcement bill was defeated on Monday 34-32. Deadbeat parents
owe over $280,000,000 in child support. The bill that was
defeated on
Monday would have required your social security number to be listed
on
all drivers application, motor boat license applications, etc.
The social
security number can be used to trace deadbeat parents across state
boundaries. The applications are confidential and destroyed.
The
social security numbers are sent to Health and Welfare and are
kept confidential. This whole affair boils down tracking down
deadbeat
parents instead of our Idaho taxpayers supporting the kids. I
suspect
the legislature will hopefully show some common sense and get the
needed bills passed.
2. 60% School Bond Elections--A bill that would give school districts
the
option to hold school bond elections at the 60% level was approved
for printing by the House Education Committee on a 12-5 vote. The
bill
now goes to State Affairs. This is a constitutional amendment and
would
have to be passed by 2/3rds of the Legislature and then go on the
ballot
The bill would allow school districts to hold bond elections at
the 60%
level on consolidated election dates--the primary and general
election.
This should encourage a greater level of voter turnout.
