The February issue of Car and Driver has a column by John Phillips on
road congestion that contains some interesting statistics.

Between 1980 and 1995 the number of heavy trucks has increased 93%.
Class I freight-car miles have remained virtually static since 1960.

90% of all Americans have access to a car; 134 million have access to
two or more. Since 1972, we've registered more vehicles than the number
of licensed drivers.

In 1980, the average price for a gallon of gas was $1.25. In 1996, it
averaged $1.23. Adjusted for inflation, gas costs $.63 per gallon. Our
annual gasoline consumption has increased by 20 billion gallons since
1980. The number of vehicles has increased by 45.5 million in that
period: slightly more than one new car for every American born.

The total number of roads in this country has decreased by 50,000 miles
since 1980.
