A total of 31 legislators are participating in the program. This past
legislative session we passed a number of major welfare reform bills. Even
the
limited opportunity to participate in a program like Walk A Mile will give
us an opportunity to learn about some successes and also problems of the
legislation. I've already worked with men, women, and children on welfare
since the legislative session, and it is apparent that many major problems
still need to be addressed by the legislature.
The local citizens on welfare that I've worked with are highly
motived to work and proud they can provide this type of support for their
families. But we need to provide family support and training to assist them
move ahead.
