memorial bike ride

Aside from the wonderful turnout for the bike ride on Sunday, what I
appreciated about it was the sense of true community. No one had "ownership"
of the ride. Tom didn't let the potential liability of putting 100+ cyclists
on the road get in the way of proceeding with the idea. (Although I know he
worried about it.) People who didn't know each other worked together.
Everyone just pitched in, identified needs, shared ideas, and pulled it off.

I read in the DN that someone thought about having the ride as an annual
event. I think that is a good idea. If it happens, we'll probably end up
having to incorporate a special "Memorial Bike Ride Committee," get
insurance, have countless meetings, etc. In the meantime, though, I'd like
to enjoy the feeling that comes from accomplishing something meaningful
through the combined efforts of individuals rather than through an
ultra-organized, semi-professional operation.
