Jeanne McHale, in the attached message, is angry with me for spreading
lies about the UI in the infamous "fun fact" posting. While I would be
glad to let the issue die, since it won't, I will respond one last time.
People give me bits of information, tips for stories, etc
regularly--for me to write about or pass on to reporters or whatever.
The disgruntle who gave me this information obviously gave me
incorrect information. He/she was angry at the disparity of the UI's lack
of monetary support for wages, supplies, etc while hosting the
inauguration--but was too afraid to post the message or write a letter to
the editor or whatever. I didn't think this was a big enough
deal to pass on to a reporter, but did think it was a relevant point and
said I would post it to the 2020 list.
I didn't verify either the statement that all classes were closed
or the dollar amount. I thought my posting made it clear that I was only
passing on the message.
I am sorry to have been a conduit for incorrect information, and I
certainly am sorry to been such a bother to my friend Jeanne McHale and
the other UI supporters.

Hello Bill,

This message is from your friend as well as from a proud U of I employee who
has followed the electronic paper trail concerning your "fun fact". The
point I want to make is that it was not a fact, and I believe you owe the
members of the UI community an apology for posting it. Professors were NOT
required to cancel classes for the inauguration, although they were
permitted to do so in order to attend the inauguration. (Perhaps that is
why this "disgruntled employee" didn't want her name to be associated with
this misinformation...) And even if all classes had been canceled, it is
patently ridiculous to translate this into a sum with six significant
figures! Would $187,649 have been saved if professors had NOT attended the
inauguration? If I had attended, I would have had no less work to do after
attending the inauguration. And even if it did make sense to come up with a
figure, if the cowardly person who gave it to you assumed ALL classes were
cancelled, then it is even more of a lie.

You say you posted the orignial message because the person who gave you the
figure wanted to remain anonymous. If this person wishes to remain
anonymous, then it is up to you to apologize on her behalf. The original
posting was mean-spirited and I was highly offended by it. I hope you will
set things straight.

Your friend,

Jeanne (using Fritz' e-mail - NO this message was not sent from a UI computer!)
