The consensus on the list appears to be that certain rituals, like
inaugurations, build a sense of community and solidarity. I regret that I
was unable to attend.

However, I would like to add that I can envision any number of disgruntled
UI employees--especially those who are deeply affected by the payroll lag
in which UI employees are foregoing the equivalent of a full paycheck (in
some households two paychecks) until they leave the university; in
addition to those employees who feel hit again (despite their meritorious
work performance) by an assurance that there will be no pay raise this
year.

Many at the UI, and particularly the lowest paid employees who often hold
down multiple jobs, may indeed find it hard to swallow that the
funding of pomp and circumstance (albeit welcoming, institution- and
community-building) is seemingly at their expense.

I don't want to engage in a debate about dollars. I just think that some
of those people may not be represented as well on this list.

Best,
Susan
