For more than 10 years, citizens of the Palouse region have planned
for and dreamed of a recreation and transportation link between Pullman
and Moscow -- a path for families and individuals to use for bicycling,
walking, jogging and more. A route allowing travelers to leave cities for
a few miles to enjoy the peaceful countryside and nature up close, step by
step.
Now, thanks to a federal grant and the planned abandonment of a rail
line between Pullman and Moscow by Palouse River Railroad, the path's
reality is nearer than ever before. It will be built in summer of 1997 on
the railroad closest to State Highway 8 which will be abandoned over the
next few months. This will provide a safe, separated trail with 10' of
paved surface.
Citizens in Moscow and across Latah county must work together
quickly with organizers in Whitman County and Pullman to raise up to
$450,000 in private donations to cover local match and construction costs.
Trail supporters have already pledged $2000,000 of that amount.
This is the year to give to make this project a reality. Donations
can be made directly to the University of Idaho Foundation or
Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute in Moscow. Also accepting
donations are the Pullman Civic Trust and WSU Foundation. Join your
friends and neighbors in this community adventure, and follow the Bill
Chipman Palouse Trail to completion!
