Dear Fellow Visionaries,
An appeal to help local farmers, our local chain grocery stores and
our community. Gary Hagen, of Hagen's Orchard (2255 Reservoir Road,
Clarkston, WA 99403, phone: 509-758-3450) who regularly sells apples, cider
etc in the Farmers' Market on summer Saturdays, and used to sell thru
Tidyman's and Excell et al has been told orders from local producers take
too much bookkeeping time (and is done out of the Spokane office), so he
won't be able to sell this year.
So Gary will appear this Saturday morning in his usual market stall
to sell to anyone we can coax there. He will take orders from anyone who
needs any of this 3000 boxes of apples or cider made from them, and he will
bring them up when we need them.
How can we help Gary stay a family farmer? (See the article in 29
Oct 96 New York Times, p A16 "Huge Orchards increase Apple Crops ... and
threaten Family Farms" Royal City dateline) How can we help our chain
stores be more responsible to our local community and economy?
Give Gary a ring for an order! Spread the message. Thanks R Hatley.
