With all the interest now focused on the sheriff race, and with no
incumbent running, this may be the time for the public to get more
involved with the future direction of that department.
Thus, Moscow Vision 2020 is sponsoring a public forum, Tuesday,
October 22, at 7:30pm, at the Moscow Community Center.
A panel of 3 (Charlie Gerke, Moscow schools safe-schools
coordinator, Quint Thurman WSU prof. and co-director of the Washington
Center for Community-Oriented Policing, and George Capowich, UI prof of
criminal justice) will focus on answering--
-what is community-based policing?
-could it work in Latah County?
-are there other examples of effective community-based systems in
similar rural areas?
Community-based policing (which includes strengthening
families/communities, providing continuity in law enforcement personnel,
focusing on prevention, etc) has worked elsewhere. Maybe this discussion
would be a positive addition to the sheriff's race.
Dave Uberuaga, businessman and police reserve officer in Moscow,
will serve as moderator.
Please plan to attend.
