Correction: The "Tale of 2 Cities" series was last YEAR. (Maybe it
only seems like last week.)

Lois,
Thanks for your observations and suggestions.
Obviously, Moscow is not immune from national trends of declined civic
participation (i.e. "Bowling Alone"). And I think the transitional
nature of a university community (students turn over every year, faculty
move on to other places) makes it more difficult to establish long-term
associations.
Yet Moscow does seem to have a lot going for it... Participants in the
"Tale of Two Cities" series last week repeatedly praised Moscow's sense
of community, especially in comparison to Pullman.
Looking back at the 20-some years I've been in Moscow, most of the
good things are related to quality of life -- especially the arts:
jazz festival, Rendezvous, summer theatre, the Micro, Bookpeople.
This might be a theme for a contest or similar participatory activity--
to ask people to identify the positive changes in our community (and
find out what made them happen and who was behind them).
I'll raise the question on Thursday evening.
