I have long been curious about why Moscow has so many creative, intelligent
people and yet lacks the kind of industriousness that this should produce.
For example, everyone complains about the schools but there has been little
demand on the part of the public for change. Even the school listserv is
dead for lack of interest. I tried to come up with a list of improvements
that have been made in Moscow during the 17years I've lived here that have
come from a grass roots effort. I could think of only a few:
Moscow Food Coop
PCEI
Coalition for Central America (not directed at improving Moscow)
Logos School
YWCA/Sojourner's Alliance
Am I missing some? I think the best thing true visionaries can do is
develop an overall vision for the future of Moscow, set priorities, and then
mobilize groups to act on those priorities, bringing in people outside the
internet, such as church groups or other existing organizations.
Perhaps before doing this you would have to figure out why there is this
inertia/apathy/lethargy. (And I must admit that I have succumbed to it as
well, but partially because I have put energy into my kids and their
activities--swim team--over the past 16 years.)
I would also suggest identifying who the visionaries in this community area.
Some have subscribed to vision 2020, but perhaps not all. Who gets things
done here? Get nominations.
