urban vs. rural west

In response to Steve's question about the effectiveness of the "divorce
trial" format:

I thought it was a good way to illustrate the sources of the conflict.
But I left wishing for a second round in which a mediator would sit the
parties down and help them figure out a way to live together in harmony.
What practical lessons can we draw that would help us get along better
in the West?

Clearly, there are at least two cultures in the West that don't really
understand each other (three, if you recognize Gens' distinction between
"big urban" like Seattle and "little urban" like Moscow-Pullman).

What type of public forum/trust-building exercise could we devise to
get people in our region talking toeach other -- a public "hearing"
in the truest sense of the word, as Dan Kemmis advocates?
