Walmart Story

I hope that some of you had the opportunity to read the Walmart
story that appeared in last Sunday's Spokesman Review business section.
Part of the focus of that story was the economic impact of Walmart
on the Moscow community.

I encourage you to look at the sales figures. One the promises
continually made by Walmart is that their store in a community will
create a regional attraction for shopping activity and thus help more
small businesses in a community rather than hurt them. Steve Cooke
explained how this might work in the Walmart town meeting several
years ago.

In the Moscow community, this scenario never materialized. For
Moscow, the pie appears more fixed than expanding. The pressure on
small businesses continues to grow.
