A legal notice with the proposed budget appears in the Thursday and Friday
Daily News, although it's difficult to make comparisons, since it doesn't
include the 1995 budget or actual expenditures.
The hearings are usually attended only by the commission and district employees
, but this might be a good opportunity for all 1,200 people who voted in this
month's election for highway commissioner to attend and ask questions.
Among the questions that might be asked are:
* If the district was able to carry over nearly $600,000 in unspent money
from this year, why doesn't it reduce our property taxes by that mount?
* When is the priority list for paving of rural roads that the commissioners
carry around in their heads going to be committed to writing, and why isn't
there a long-term plan for road improvements?
* What steps does the commission plan to involve the residents of the district
in helping to decide where the $95,000 for culverts, signs and bridges will
be spent?
