I agree with Tom that the Legislature should extend campaign finance
reporting to highway district elections. (I find it curious that
highway districts were exempted from both term limits and reporting
of campaign contributions and expenditures.)
The issue of campaign financing at the national level is addressed by Molly
Ivins in a column in today's Spokesman-Review:
"As all goo-goos (good-government advocates) know, the real root of the rot
in government is still campaign financing. Politicians sitll dance with them w
hat brung 'em, and in the case of the Republicans, they're dancing cheek to
cheek. Until that sewer is cleaned up, we'll never have real representative
government."
