The Moscow-Latah Shared Facilities Task Force has scheduled a public presentati
on on its proposal to shuffle government offices in around Moscow. The meeting
will be Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. at the council chamber of City Hall.
This proposal is seen as way of reducing future costs of building new buildings
as well as a way to make better use of the historic public building's in Mosco
w's core. (The latter is important when we think of walking circles and ways t
o reduce vehicular traffic downtown.)
In a nutshell, the proposal calls for:
1. Moscow Police Department to move to Latah Courthouse to share space in a joi
nt law enforcement center with the Sheriff's Office.
2. All county offices except sheriff, prosecutor and courts to move to the 2nd
and 3rd floors of the 1912 Moscow High School (Whitworth Building).
3. Moscow Community Center moves to first floor of 1912 MHS (the old gymnasium)
. In addition to a large room for meetings, luncheons, dances, etc., there may
be room for some smaller conference rooms as well.
4. All city offices move from old City Hall (now called the Annex) to the first
floor of the new City Hall (old Post Office). I'm not sure how they all fit..
. it may be necessary to finish the basement, too. Parks and Rec offices also
move there from the Eggan Youth center.
5. Alternative high school moves to the youth center.
6. School District offices move to the old City Hall, now empty. (School Distr
ict would still need to find warehouse space somewhere.)
I'm not clear what order the shift would happen, but obviously a key is renovat
ing the upper floors of the Whitworth Building.
Pam Palmer is a member of the Task Force. She's part of the 2020 list and can
be reached at Councilpam@aol.com. Other key players are County Commissioner Sh
irley Greene and School Superintendent Jack Hill.
I'd be interested in hearing response to these ideas from 2020 members, so that
we can get answers to questions in advance of the Feb. 16 meeting.
