Jim Becker resigned from the Moscow Planning and Zoning Commission at Wednesday
's meeting. He is moving to Seattle to become a regional manager for GTE. He w
as chair of the P&Z for the last two or three years, and will be missed.
His departure means there are now two openings on the 9-member commission. (Ju
di McKetta's term expired earlier this month, and Mayor Agidius declined to rea
ppoint her for reasons that have not been disclosed.)
Jeanne Leffingwell, a member of the Mountainview Road committee, came to Wednes
day's meeting. If she wasn't deterred by the process she observed, she may appl
y for one of the openings. I'm told Dorothy Thomas may also be interested; any
one who knows her should call and encourage her to apply.
If you know anyone else who is interested, they should send a letter to the may
or and follow up in a day or so with a phone call. The City Council meets agai
n on Feb. 6, and the mayor may make appointments then. The P&Z usually meets t
wice a month for 2-3 hours at a time. For more information about duties, conta
ct Dale Pernula, the city planner, at 883-7000, or 2020 member Joel Hamilton (a
P&Z commissioner and former chair).
There are also openings on the Moscow Tree Committee and the Historic Preservat
ion Commission. These groups usually meet only once a month, and are a good wa
y to get involved in city government without a major time commitment. David Ra
uk is the new chair of the Tree Committee and Jack Porter chairs the Historic P
reservation Commission. Potential applicants for these should follow the same
procedure as described earlier for P&Z. KENTON
