Sallie Giffen, vice president for business affairs at WSU, will speak to the Pu
llman Chamber of Commerce luncheon Friday (Jan. 20) at the Hilltop Restaurant a
bout future enrollment growth at WSU.
WSU's enrollment plan developed by Provost Tom George calls for an ON-CAMPUS en
rollment of 20,000 students by the year 2010. (About 10,000 more than current e
nrollment in Pullman.) Although WSU intends to house 50 percent of the increas
e on campus, the remaining 5,000 students, plus however many faculty and staff
are hired to keep up with them, would need to find housing elsewhere. This woul
d have significant impact on housing supply, water consumption, schools, public
services and quality of life not only in Pullman, but in Moscow and Latah Coun
ty as well.
Are any 2020 types available to go to this lunch and ask Ms. Giffin where the w
ater is going to come from to support that kind of enrollment growth? I'd go my
self, but I have a class Friday at noon. Alternatively, does anyone have any4
friends or co-workers who live or work in Pullman who might go and pose some of
these questions? WSU has for too long done its enrollment planning in a vacuu
m without respect to how its increasing numbers affect the communities and natu
ral resources that support it.
