Greetings,
I'm so excited about our listserver I couldn't wait to try it out!
I wanted to call everyone's attention to the January-February issue of the Utne
Reader, which should be on news stands this week. The cover story is "100 vis
ionaries who could change your life." Among the people profiled is Dan Kemmis,
the mayor of Missoula, who talks about consensus building in a community.
He tells how Missoula developed trails along the Clark Fork River without a "gr
and plan" -- linear park task force advocates, take note.
Of special interest to me was his comment: "I'd like to figure out how Missoula
could realize twice as much of its potential by having its busiest citizens do
half as much as they now do, while encouraging the underengaged tos ample more
of the delights of citizenship." (p. 79)
It seems to me that is our challenge in Moscow as well... we busy people need t
o find a way to cut back our involvement so we don't burn out.
Can anyone think of a way we could invite Kemmis to come to Moscow for a confer
ence this spring? Maybe he'd come over with the promise of jazz festival ticket
s and lodging at someone's house...
Happy holidays,
KENTON
