Benefit contra dance for 1912 Center

 The Palouse Folklore Society will sponsor a contra dance at 7:30 p.m.
June 3 at the Avalon House, 111 N. Washington.  (Oldtimers like me know
the building as the former Short's Funeral Chapel; more recently, it was
known as the Louisiana Purchase.)

Moscow band Potatohead will play with dances called by Joseph
Erhard-Hudson of Moscow.   Cost is $5 for PFS members and $7 for
nonmembers. Newcomers who arrive at 7:30 p.m. will pay $4.

The dance is a fund-raiser for the 1912 Center, being developed by the
city of Moscow.  The center will include a "great room" in the former
gymnasium that will be ideally suited for such events as contra dances.

Contra dancing is a form of American folk dancing which is experiencing
renewed popularity.  Each dance is taught by the caller, who cues
dancers through the dance.  Copules face each other in long lines; after
two couples dance the pattern with each other, they trade places and
begin again with the next couple in line.  All ages participate, and
contra dances are always smoke- and alcohol-free.  Casual clothes and
comfortable shoes are appropriate.

I was at Avalon House earlier this week for a meeting and the floor is
wood parquet with a little give to it, so it should be a great surface
for dancing.
