I just finished reading Lou Sternberg's posting to 2020 describing
community policing.
Communication by police--and not just communication with the affluent, the
mainstream, the satisfied--seemed to me to be the core of the definition he
posted. Continuing rumors or unmet complaints undermine police authority
and the concept of community policing.
So, I guess I still would offer the forum as a place for those with
concerns about our police to voice them. I think communication is better
than the alternative. And I think the forum is a good place to start.
I am not suggesting a kangaroo court, or a venting of unsubstantiated
rumor. I am talking about a discussion of the role of police in our town
and the perceived need by some for community oversight of police activities.
Dan Weaver (Moscow Chief of Police) is on the Community Retreat advisory
board. He helped shape the event. I assume he and other officers will
attend. This seems like a good chance to talk. Civic dialogue--that's what
this is all about.
