More Lessons From The Trail

Another lesson to be learned from the Chipman Trail is this: Most people =
won't use the trail more than 4 months out of the year. But when people =
assessed the value of the project and what they were willing to put into =
it to make it happen -- time and money -- they did so based on the value =
of it to our communities, not $ per square foot/ per month of use/or =
some other artificial evaluation. Trying to quantify an outdoor =
activity -- in our current discussion, a pool -- doesn't make sense when =
you think of what you're trying to put a dollar value on. Don't most of =
us understand intuitively the value of outdoor exercise and recreation =
-- however small or large the dose of it?

And bravo to Charlie Powell for stretching our thinking with the =
comments on endowment and to so many people who are now focusing their =
energy on getting the bond passed. This pool can only be a building =
block for future projects -- as several people have said -- if we work =
together to make it happen.=20
