traffic calming demonstration project

The Moscow city transportation plan now contains 2 references to the
installation of traffic calming devices to slow traffic on residential
(NOT arterial) streets. Traffic calming devices (very common in Europe,
as well as in some US cities like Boise, Seattle, and Portland) include
landscaped islands or peninsulas that interupt quick traffic flow on streets.
On Monday, may 20, I spoke at the Moscow Public Works Committee
of the City Council meeting. I told the committee that the idea of
retrofitting Moscow residential streets, specifically the street where I
live (Polk Street--now renamed Polka Street--between 3 and 6), was born
at the first annual block party when we blocked off the street for a potluck.
In preparation for the second annual block party, I was hoping to
prepare a display of traffic calming options (things that we could do on
Polka Street) for the residents to view and discuss.
The council committee (Pall, Palmer and Hodge) were all
supportive. Pall suggested that the Polka Street project be a
demonstration for the city on options to put people first on residential
streets in Moscow.
The UI landscape architecture department is hoping to find a
student to help with drawing these options/ideas/suggestions for the
presentation at the block party.
With the help of the city engineer's office, each option would
also have a price tag attached (a preliminary estimate of the cost of
that option).
Does anyone else want to get involved in this project now? We
will be meeting to discuss the options and all.
If you want to get involved in this project, let me know. Call
