Re: Pure Culture

I have just signed on to the vision2020 list. Looks interesting. In fact,
the first message, from Andy Shaw, was also the first one I read, and it
immediately raised a question that I just had to ask, and don't have access
to any earlier part of the thread:

What do you mean by 'purity' (...in our communities)?

Ethnic purity? (We certainly don't have that! I'm 25% Italian,
15% French, 10% English, and have, at times, sported
a deep tan. I don't know what the other part of the 100% is.)
Racial purity? (Nope, we don't have that either. Ever hear of Vera White or
Mary Clearman Blue? People come in all colors around the Palouse.)
Political purity? (Although Democrats are in the minority, there are,
nevertheless,
a smattering of Republicans here and there.)
Religious purity? (Uh...prob'ly not. I'm a Catholic with
Bokononist/pantheistic
leanings, for example, and in my youth worshipped Tina Turner. My
presence
alone breaks the religious purity here.)
Moral purity? (...come on!! See previous example.)
Musical purity? (Yes, we do have that. Just listen to some of my
compositions. Uh... never mind. My style is influenced by Alban Berg.)
Economic purity? (...don't forget about all the 'filthy luchre.' changing
hands
     daily.)
Dietary purity? (No, and while I'm here I'd like to encourage everyone to
join my new 'Plant's Rights' movement: It is immoral to be a vegetarian,
as
well as bad for your health. We plan to have weekly meatings.)

Heck, I doubt you could even find a PURE strain of soft winter wheat around
here.
