Local schoolchildren, parents and community leaders to participate in Walk
to School Day on October 1, 2002
The Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute (PCEI) and the Friends of
Neighborhood Schools (FONS) will be joining schools from around the country
to celebrate Walk to School Day on October 1, 2002.
This is the sixth year this national event has been held. Last year, more
than 600,000 parents, kids and community leaders from 49 U.S. states walked
to school together that day. The idea is to walk to school together with a
purpose - to promote health, safety, physical activity and concern for the
environment. Walkers from the U.S. will be joining more than 25 countries
from around the world to celebrate the third International Walk to School
Day.
Children in the Moscow School District, both Charter Schools, St. Maries
School and Logos School are being encouraged to walk to school on this day
along with parents, teachers and community leaders.
Students, professors and staff of the University of Idaho are also
encouraged to observe the day and walk to school.
Locally, the day is being celebrated one day early due to public school
schedules. To learn more about Walk to School Day, visit the official web
site at http://www.walktoschool.org
