Dear Visionaries-
This Saturday night is the Latah Trail Foundation's community fundraiser,
the Latah Luau. Last year's event raised over $25,000 to help build the
trail between Moscow and Troy. It's a lot of work, but it will be a great
evening. Consider organizing a table of friends or coworkers to attend the
dinner and auction with you (there are only ten tables left.) The press
release below gives details of the evening.
If you're interested in volunteering or wish to reserve a table, please
reply to me off-list.
I want to give a huge thanks to the entire community for the generous
support to help make this a successful event.
Thanks,
Pam Palmer

Latah Trail Luau
Escape to the Islands at the Latah Luau this Saturday, September 14, at the
University Inn Best Western in Moscow. Arriving to a traditional lei
greeting, guests will enter a festive Island atmosphere to the sounds of
Makinı Island Music. Additional entertainment includes Polynesian-style
drumming and the resonant sound of the conch. The 6 PM social hour and
silent auction and 7 PM full-service dinner precede the Latah Trail
Foundationıs live auction of travel packages, recreation gear and stunning
artwork, all generously donated for the purpose of raising money to help
build the Latah Trail between Moscow and Troy. Reserved tables for eight
people are quickly filling up as trail supporters and recreation enthusiasts
prepare for a celebration of community spirit.
University Inn Executive Chef Robert Kunze presents a luau feast, including
a traditional kalua pig prepared by the University of Idaho Meat Lab,
chicken long rice, lomi lomi salmon, wehani rice salad, Asian noodles, fresh
tropical fruit, yams, Portuguese sweet rolls, and haupia cake. Local wine
vendors and connoisseurs are providing complimentary wines, with area
grocers and florists providing tropical centerpieces. Luau tickets are $35
each and tables for eight are $240, available in advance at Bookpeople in
Moscow, Daily Grind on Main St. in Pullman, and Sunset Mart in Troy.
For those craving travel, adventures up for auction include a raft trip for
eight down the Salmon River, courtesy of Northwest River Supply and Salmon
River Experience, ski passes for Brundage Mountain and overnight lodging in
the Hotel McCall, accommodations in the Salmon River Rapids Lodge in
Riggins, and a week-long stay at the Balboa Towers in sunny Mazatlan this
December. Tempting bike tours include ³Cycle the Divide Ride² from
Adventure Cycling, a ride from Telluride to Moab provided by San Juan Hut
System, bike rentals for the new Silver Trail with bed and breakfast
accommodations in Harrison, and bike rentals for the Hiawatha Trail with two
nights lodging at the Best Western Wallace Inn. Bike tune-ups, a 2003
Raleigh comfort bicycle, locally designed bicycle helmet, water packs, a
Sierra Designs Flex sleeping bag and a multitude of accessories from area
recreation stores are all available for bid.
Art enthusiasts who remember the Latah Trailıs 2001 fundraiser, ³The Fine
Art of Trail Raising², will have another great opportunity to collect
original pieces from local artists, including Ben Carpenterıs turned wood
vessels, a new watercolor painted specifically for the Latah Luau by Dr.
Wayne Ruby, a distinctive raku cowboy boot by Elsie Sakuma, photographs by
regional artists, and unique handmade jewelry by several local artists.
In addition, visitors may bid on entertainment packages, including season
tickets to the Auditorium Chamber music series, the Washington-Idaho
Symphony and the Idaho Repertory Theatre, swim passes, Vandal passes, or a
downtown date package, including flowers, dinner, and movies.
For those preferring quieter pastimes, auction-goers may select from
Hawaiian cookbooks, travel and biking books, gift certificates for massages,
hairstyles, pedicure for oneıs self or oneıs dog, piano or cello lessons,
shopping at favorite stores or a chance to spruce up the backyard with
deck-building services donated by Carpenters Local 313.
Printed programs with a full list of auction items and their contributors
will be available the night of the auction. Ron Landeck, Master of
Ceremonies and Latah Trail Foundation Board President will present awards to
this yearıs Golden Spike recipients and will announce the latest updates on
Trail developments. Doorprizes will be awarded throughout the evening.
Guests can document the memory of the evening with $10 portraits by
Backtrack Photography.
