RE: Talk Show 8/18/02: Gun Rights/Pink Pistols

I realize that you probably feel like a persecuted minority at times -- both
on this list and by our government. And I know that can make a person
hyper-sensitive to issues related to that perceived persecution -- which is
what I suspect happened in this case. But if you actually listened to the
show on yesterday I believe you would have found little, if anything, to
disagree with me about. And in fact I suspect others on the list would have
found more to disagree with me than you would have.

That is not to say that you and I are agreement on many things -- I'm
certain we have completely different philosophies and world views, but
yesterdays show was not an illustration of those differences.

Here is more information on the Pink Pistols.

It seems they are more interested in exposing themselves to more members of
society than in just being a shooting club and the excerpts below expose
that agenda.

John Harrell

http://www.pinkpistols.org/breaking_barriers.html

"Socially, the pink and shooting communities are both quite similar. Both
are often insular and can be closeted, and both have a stereotypical
preconceptions about what the other is like. Members of either group can
feel threatened by a representative of the other group. Because you
belong to two groups which are supposed to oppose each other, people
are forced to question their preconceptions about whether shooters and
pink people should be adversarial and why. Their confusion creates
curiousity and gives you a chance to step in and explain your views,
potentially building relationships."

"When you appear in one community as a representative of both, you
want to use your membership credentials in one group as credibility to
break down the preconceptions they have about the other group."

"Pink groups should focus on alternative sexuality."

"Think your positions through and be willing to examine them from
other points of view. Practice arguing your position from different
political points of view. Think, why would a liberal support firearms
rights of pink rights? Why would a conservative, or a socialist? Do
not attempt to argue your position using a political philosophy that
your opponent disagrees with. Argue it using *their* system of
philosophy, and you may make an impression."

"Being a member of a pink shooting community provides a unique
opportunity to educate people on both sides, where the education is most
needed. By working in both communities, you expose people who have
fearful preconceptions to a less threatening reality, changing people's
perceptions. Your very existence is a type of activism, and can have
great effect by helping to shatter some of the mental dichotomies people
use to pidgeonhole each other, expose common bonds that are swept
under the rug, and create real dialogue that our political climate
discourages."
