I recently read an article about the "One City/One Book" concept that began
in Seattle, spread to California and now to Chicago. The idea is that the
mayor or city council selects a book for the entire community to read over
the summer or a period of several months. It is a way to bring people in
the community together, to bridge generations and occupations because we
will have this one common experience. Imagine standing in the check-out
line at the grocery store and being able to strike up a conversation with
someone you don't know because you are both reading the same book, or
talking to one of your children's friends about literature. Obviously the
book needs to be one with wide appeal. e.g. I think Chicago chose "To Kill
a Mockingbird." California is reading some John Steinbeck because this is,
what, his 100th birthday year?

What do you think City Council?

Lois

P.S. Laurie, If you are serving chocolate when you discuss "Chocolat" and
"Like Water for Chocolate," what will you be providing at the March
meeting?
