Early Learning Collaborative Project in Latah County is Selected for
Funding!!
The Early Learning Collaborative Project, submitted by the Early Childhood
Service Council of Latah County, was selected for funding by the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, Early Learning Opportunities Act
Grant committee. Twenty six grants were awarded nationwide, for a total of
$20 million. The Early Childhood Service Council was awarded $595,786 for
a 17 month period (October 2001 to February 2003). The community has
committed matching funds in the amount of $105,139 (15% of total request).
The purpose of this project is to promote sustained gains in early
learning by expanding the capacity of parents and caregivers to facilitate
early development. Families are the primary educators of young children
and family involvement is one of the strongest predictors of a child's
success. Educational opportunities for families will be strengthened and
expanded and new programs will be developed. The Young Children and Family
Programs at Gritman Medical Center and the Parents as Teachers Program
will be integral parts of this project. Gritman Medical Center will be
the fiscal agent for this project. Contact Marci Schreiber, Project
Director, to request a Fact Sheet or to learn about the volunteer and paid
positions available.
