I doubt it was weekly newspapers since all the weeklies are usually
delivered by Thursday or Friday at the latest. (except across country, I
guess)

Interesting.  Years ago, I asked a postmaster about stopping Sat. deliveries
and he told me they existed because the newspapers wanted them.  Never did
understand that one.
