"Grow Smart, Idaho! Practical Tools You Can Use" to be Held April 6-7 in Boise
Over the past decade many of the cities in Idaho have grown at a staggering
pace. Everybody can feel the difference between what it was like to live
here ten years ago and what it is like to live here now. Most people are
concerned that growth is eroding the sense of character in Idaho communities
as well as creating increased traffic congestion and a host of other
problems. Yet, folks believe that to gain the advantages of growth they will
just have to put up with the impacts. It's time for Idahoans to turn the
tables and consciously direct growth so that it reflects our values and
needs.
To further this discussion, Idaho Smart Growth is pleased to sponsor its
first statewide conference, "Grow Smart, Idaho! Practical Tools You Can Use"
this April 6-7 at the Owyhee Plaza Hotel in Boise. Idaho residents, business
leaders, developers, elected officials, planning professionals and others
that attend will leave with realistic tools that they can use in their
community to increase the positive consequences of growth. Plenary panels
will explore emerging growth issues and the public decision-making process.
Breakout sessions include:
* Farmland and open space conservation
* Mapping community assets
* Smart street design guidelines
* Housing types for a changing population
* Small town economic development and revitalization
* Smart growth by design
The conference will conclude with a participatory design exercise where
attendees can use smart growth principles. As an alternative, a bus tour of
Treasure Valley growth issues will also be offered.
The cost to attend is $90 and includes breakfast and lunch on Friday and
Saturday, and a banquet dinner on Friday night. The cost for seniors and
students is $40 and also includes meals. A limited number of full and
partial scholarships are available for those living lightly. Inquiries about
