Fuel efficiency and the presidential race
I am sending this message because the topic or gasoline prices has already
been introduced to Vision 2020 recently. As we all know, decreased demand
(via higher fuel efficiency) would certainly result in lower gas prices.
There is an interesting article today on the Vote Nadar Web site at
http://votenader.org/goresbrokenpromises.html. It states
In 1992 Candidate Gore promised to "raise the Corporate Average Fuel
Efficiency
(CAFE) standards for automakers to 40 miles per gallon by the year 2000,"
from the current standard set at 27.5 miles per gallon. . . . But after
eight years of opportunity
to raise CAFE standards, they remain at 27.5 miles per gallon, and
passenger total
fuel economy has dropped to 24.6 miles per gallon and has hit its lowest
point since
1980.
This article may disappear after today, as the page is supposed to feature
one broken promise of Al Gore per day through the election. If you want to
read the full article and it has already disappeared, contact me for a copy.
