Re: $5,000,000 Bob Hamilton Legacy
I've not read the article about the $5 million left by Bob Hamilton to
use in Moscow for youth and recreation programs. The $5 million
offers great promise for the future.
I agree with those who recommend the money should be put in a
trust fund and invested wisely. The earnings from the Hamilton Fund
can then be use prudently and wisely. Setting up a foundation is a
good idea. We have plenty of expertise with the University of
Idaho Foundation who could provide counsel in how to set up the
foundation and how to operate it. One would want to keep administrative
costs at a minimum.
One advantage of having, for example, $300,000 coming in a year
to support youth and recreation activities is the leverage that the
funds
could provide. The City of Moscow, for example, could propose in
a grant application that they would put up 50% of the cost of a certain
project or activity to support youth and the foundation could put up
the other 50%. Foundations like the Idaho Community Foundation
would be other potential sources. The University of Idaho, service
clubs, and other entities are other potential donors who could match
funds. What a wonderful opportunity.
