Moscow Sam
Let me begin by saying that I was, am, will always be opposed to a vote
on the 1912 building framed the way it was presented to city council. That
proposal was put forth in a way that would have insured defeat. The
proposed referendum would have asked Moscow voters if they favored using tax
dollars to fund construction of the new community center. I have long
supported this project and I would have voted *no*. Supporters of this
project have not asked for public monies to be used in the construction
phase of this project. In order for this project to be a success we need
the community to voluntarily step forward with the necessary funding.
I did not include my position on a public vote on the fate of the 1912
building because I did not want to detract from the purpose of my letter.
We do not live in a democracy. We live in a democratic republic.
We elect our leaders and expect that they will make sound decisions. We
expect that they will listen to our input. If they do a poor job, we throw
them out and find someone else to do the job. Our city council has been
taking input on the 1912 building for many years. Both the yea and the nay
sayers have spoken loud and often. The yea sayers and $170,000 in donations
convinced the city council to buy the building. The yea sayers and a $2
million donation convinced the city council to proceed with the
transformation from 1912 building to 1912 Center. The citizens of Moscow,
through their elected officials, have spoken. We should proceed with the
project.
The road to this point has not been an easy one. Obstacles have been
met and overcome. As new chalenges appear the ever present voice will tell
us we can not succeed. To heed that voice before we do all we can to
surmount the difficulties placed before us, would be to fail at more than
the task at hand.
