And let's not forget our biggest community-building
success story ever -- the founding in a Pullman garage
and subsequent growth to international stature of
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories. With their bold
investment in this business, Ed and Mary personally,
and their employee-owned company, have advanced the
technology that protects electric power delivery not
only for us locally but for millions of consumers
around the world. By keeping their company in Pullman,
they have also contributed immeasurably to the local
economy by providing jobs for hundreds of area
residents and tax support for the infrastructure,
schools, government, and other services that help make
our Palouse region special to us and attractive to
other major investors and people and businesses
considering relocating. Not to be overlooked are their
personal and corporate philanthropic activities
benefitting the whole Palouse region, and especially
students and academic and research programs at both
universities and in the Pullman public schools. Behind
the scenes, both Ed and Mary personally deserve (but
never seek) recognition for numerous individual
kindnesses that (by their choice) never make the
news -- not only locally, but nationally and globally,
wherever they are traveling or their business is
involved. They aren't ever still enough to receive
"pats on the back," but, to my mind, this community
owes them both pats and HUGS for their vision,
generosity (both "sung" and "unsung"), and commitment
to the Palouse.
