There is an excellent article in the Jan/Feb 2000 edition of World Watch
magazine entitled,
"Water Shock:  A Global Report on Groundwater Safety."  This is must
reading for those
of us who are concerned about the polluting of the world's major freshwater
stores.  There
is excellent coverage of problems in the U.S., and one must reflect on
problems with our
own Palouse acquifer.   The author, Payal Sampat, notes, "Scientists have
shown that the world deep beneath our feet is essential to the life above.
Ancient myths dpicted the Underworld as a place of danation and death,  Now
the spreading contamination of major aquifers threatens to turn the myth
into a tragic reality."
