I talked Jim Carpenter, Regional Director of the Dept. of Transportation,
about the safety needs of
the stretch of highway around the Reisenhower hill area south of Moscow.
He reported there have
been 48 accidents in that stretch of highway during the past 10 years.
Thirty one accidents were
associated with speed and 28 occurred with ice and snow on the road. Up
to the recent accident
which killed five there had only been one death that occurred in the 48
accidents. He mentioned
that the stretch of road further north from the Hill located around Zeigler
Rd may have had more
accidents during the past 10 year period.
The Idaho State Patrol will finalize their report in about two weeks.
Then DOT will decide if
there are some means to improve the safety of the stretch. I mentioned
that several constituents
suggested lowering the speed limit by 5 miles/hr.
