When I lived in the post Warsaw-Pact Eastern Germany, my friends would
sometimes discuss the good and bad things that were brought by the
West. "This anti-perspirant stuff," remarked one, "that can't be
healthy. Something that stops you from sweating? That can't be healthy!"
Of course, anti-perspirant products contain an aluminum compound, and
aluminum is a toxic metal. Most people don't realize, as they drink their
beer and cola from cans, that aluminum cookware was been outlawed in Sweden
for health reasons.
A side note about the shaving issue: Shaving the armpits is a somewhat
American fad. Most women throughout the world do not do so. When women
let the hair grow, big companies don't make any money from selling razors,
shaving cream, etc. So these big companies start big advertising campaigns
and marketing to convince women that they aren't women unless they shave
their armpits. Since underarm hair is a sign of sexual maturation, I think
underarm hair on a woman is a definite hallmark of womenhood, and to remove
it is some kind of strange denial of maturity.
