Re: is e-commerce a the threat to main street trade?

Last night, on All Things Considered, Douglas Rushkoff did a commentary on
e-commerce that links to the Cody Books piece. Rushkoff commented about the
use of Moviephone to order movie tickets. Moviephone is now on the internet
and movie tickets can be prepurchased on-line. He says that in New York
City, it's not uncommon to go to a movie that is sold-out from on-line
prepurchased tickets. Thus, he says, it has become essential to be on-line
just to go to a movie. He mused that what was once a luxury is now a
neccessity, and that now the luxury is to interact at the ticket window. He
wondered if perhaps in the future the ability to go to the local store to
purchase things from a real, live person might become a luxury with
corresponding higher prices.
Thanks for the Cody Books thing; it's really thought provoking.
