I'm not a farmer, nor have I played one on TV. But I do know there are
significant structual difficulties with growing crops that are not common
in your region. The infrastructure in the Palouse is very good at
planting, harvesting, storing, packaging and transporting wheat, peas &
lentils. A farmer wishing to grow sugar beets (presuming they would grow
well here) might have to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in
equipment. Then he might have trouble finding a transport company in the
area that could properly handle the harvest, as well as markets ready and
willing to take the crop. Who in the NorthWest buys and processes sugar
beets? Wouldn't it cost too much to ship the beets to a distant processing
facility?
