I'd like to second Fred Cunningham's views on KUOI. Having been an
avid listener and occasional DJ for the last 15 years, I've seen many
staffers come and go. Only the engineering department has had
longterm continuity in staff. Thank-you, Jeff Kimberling!
Otherwise, the persons committed to KUOI have been volunteers. Leigh
Robartes, James Donnelly, Peter Basoa, Greg Meyer, Andee
Chosch-Pittenger, Matt Kitterman, Donna Rhodes and many others have
given generously of their time and musical knowledge over the years
and our community has benefitted because of them.
The music that one hears on KUOI is often unfamiliar and the genre
can change drastically from one show to the next, but that is the
beauty of this station. We hear music that otherwise would never get
airtime because of the music industry's influence over almost all
radio stations. KUOI is one of the last remaining free form radio
stations in the country and Moscow is lucky to be its home.
Every semester the schedule of shows changes at KUOI. A program
guide is usually printed in the Argonaut, the student newspaper, and
then appears on newstands around town a few weeks into the semester.
Pick one up if you're interested in a particular kind of music. Most
likely you'll hear it on KUOI sometime during the weekly schedule.
I don't know what is going on between Leigh Robartes and the new
station manager, but of all the people mentioned above, Leigh has
been one of the most dedicated and generous, keeping the student news
program running, training new DJs and subbing when needed.
I hope he gets a fair hearing by the UI Media Board.
And if you've never listened to KUOI, give it a try. It's 89.3-FM or
on the net at www.KUOI.com. Volunteer DJs are always needed, too.
If you would like to commit a few hours a week to sharing your
musical interests with others, pick up a DJ application at the
station on the third floor of the SUB. It's fun and the staff
provides all necessary training.
