===== A message from the 'smartgro' discussion list =====

The massive Walmart proposed on State Street is certain to create a
traffic
nightmare for a roadway that already is overcommitted with existing and
future growth. 28 acres of store and 10 acres of parking, plus
incredible
amounts of newly generated traffic and traffic accidents. Rising
insurance
costs, more medical and funeral costs; it just keeps adding up.

Neighborhood degradation and increased traffic hazards for residents,
commuters, and cyclists are only a part of the problem. Local
independent
merchants would be put out of business by a big box chain that returns as
little as possible to the local economy. Other cities have warned
against
allowing Walmart's, Rite Aids, and Walgreens to destroy the character and
benefits that independent shop owners give to their communities.

This Walmart proposal violates a broad range of zoning and comprehensive
plan
goals. Walmart has knowingly requested the City Council follow a
procedure
that would deny the public a hearing. They dismiss the damages to the
community as insignificant compared to their expected profit margin.

Please contact the Mayor's hotline at 384-4404 before July 13th. To date
the
hearing is still set for the evening of 7/13, at 7:30 PM, Boise City
Hall,
third floor.

Also contact Rhonda Sandmeyer at 853-5483 to support the survival,
quality,
and safety of their neighborhood.

Think about the bad-neighbor policies and precedents that will be set if
these giant chains are allowed to spread their damages to every
neighborhood
at will. The City of Boise has already given up too much, consistently
replacing authentic character and quality with zero style, cheap
construction, and deep damages to the community fabric. Please get
involved
while there is still something left to care about.
