Dear Moscow Community Theatre Members and Friends:
Please read the following press release regarding upcoming meetings
on the renovation of the 1912 (Whitworth) Building. I hope that as
many of you as possible can attend the May 26 meeting.
Among the design considerations will be the possibility of a small
stage or performance space. It is unlikely that enough space will be
allotted for a large auditorium to supplement or replace our use of
the high school stage, but a small stage still exists in the building
(though it has been sectioned off into storage space and the ceiling
has been dropped) and I would like to encourage the city to retain
this as a performing space for smale-scale theatrical productions,
poetry readings, reader's theatre, small music ensembles, etc., and
restore it so that it is appropriate for such uses.
If you can, please come to the meeting and express your support for
this idea. If you are knowledgeable about the technical aspects of
theatre your input would be extremely valuable, especially once we
reach the design stage, to assist the architects with what is
required in terms of lighting, sound, entryways and exits, and
adequate backstage and storage space. If you are experienced in this
area but cannot attend either the May 26 or June 9 meeting, please
contact me so that I can provide the information to the design team.
Finally, if you have interest or knowledge about any other area of
the arts, please come and provide your input. And forward this
message to anyone you know who is interested in supporting and
promoting the arts in Moscow!

Regional Arts Center Plans Meeting
A brainstorming and organizational meeting for the new Arts Center to be
located in the historic 1912 Moscow High School will be held on Wednesday,
May 26 from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers/City Hall. The
meeting is sponsored by the Moscow Arts Commission.
Results from the public hearings conducted by the MayorAEs Use Committee
determined that the arts were one of the top priorities for use of the
building. A Science Center is also being planned for a portion of the
building. According to Mary Blyth, director of the Moscow Arts Commission,
" this is a golden opportunity for all those interested in the arts to
share their visions and ideas for the development of a first class arts
center that will have terrific programming and presenting opportunities for
Moscow and the greater region."
Anyone interested in the development of the future Arts Center should
bring their ideas and questions to the meeting. Support is needed now to
make sure the communities needs and ideas are well represented and arts
advocates identified. On June 9 the group will have the opportunity to meet
with the design team and help to determine the specifics of the space being
allocated for the arts.
Questions concerning the meeting or the project should be directed to Mary
Blyth at 883-7036.
