One may ask, whose progress? Does change advance people's exercise of
individual freedom of expression (short of doing harm to one's
neighbor)? Does change enhance the self-development and future choices of
our children? Does change enlarge our moral and spiritual borders to
include unconditional respect of others (again, short of inflicting
physical and perhaps psychological harm to others)? Does change secure a
more wholesome natural environment for me and my community, an
environment that teaches human beings to act in ways that don't reduce
or eliminate living space of other species? Does change promote
healthier, purer and more benign relationships among those having
different values than our own? Does change inspire peace on earth and
goodwill to all humankind? Maybe there are more criteria for progress,
but these might be useful ones to consider as we plan for a better
future. Moscow-Pullman are well out in front of most American urban areas
in regard to these criterion-realted guides to change.
